| biography:
| French soldier, born in Montpensier, C France. As son of the Count of Montpensier and of the only daughter of the Duke of Bourbon, he united the estates of both these branches of the Bourbon family. For his bravery at the Battle of Marignano (1515) he was made Constable of France; but losing the favour of Francis I he concluded a private alliance with the Emperor Charles V and Henry VIII of England. He invaded France in 1524, and was chief imperial commander at Pavia, in which Francis I was taken prisoner. He was made Duke of Milan, and commanded in N Italy, but was killed while attacking Rome in 1527. |
