| biography:
| Explorer and journalist, born in Russellville, Kentucky, USA. He served in the Texas struggle for independence and went to New York City to become a journalist. His acquaintance with John James Audubon influenced his writing, which included The Hunter-Naturalist (1851). He tried but failed to organize exploration expeditions in the SW, and died in Nicaragua after joining the filibuster expedition of William Walker. |
