| US vice-president and attorney, born near Unionville Center, Ohio, USA. A prominent attorney specializing in railroad disputes, he became a senator (1898) and vigorously supported President McKinley. He served as vice-president to Theodore Roosevelt (1905–9), but had little impact upon that administration and ran unsuccessfully for the vice-presidency in 1916. |
