| biography:
| Ecologist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied at Liverpool College, and New College, Oxford, where he spent most of his career (1936–67). He was one of the first to carry out scientific studies of animals in their natural environment, and his book Animal Ecology (1927) is considered to have established the basic principles of modern animal ecology. He is recognized as having done more than anyone else to explain the complex inter-relationships of different animal communities, and their effect on their habitat. |
