| Actor and director, born in Santa Barbara, California, USA. He dropped out of college to study art and acting, and good performances on Broadway and on television led to engagements in Hollywood, but without great success until the film version of his stage role in Barefoot in the Park (1967). Major star parts soon followed, as in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), All the President's Men (1976), and Out of Africa (1985). Later films include Indecent Proposal (1993) and Up Close and Personal (1996). As a director he made the Olympics-based skiing film Downhill Racer in 1969, was awarded an Oscar for Ordinary People (1980), and directed A River Runs Through It (1993), acclaimed for its cinematography. In 1998 he directed and starred in The Horse Whisperer, and later appearances include Spy Game (2001). He established the Sundance Institute in 1981 to encourage new talent and the creation of independent feature films. He received an Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. |
