| College president and geologist, born in Fulton, Wisconsin, USA. A specialist in pre-Cambrian and metamorphic geology and a member of the US Geologic Survey, he taught at the University of Wisconsin (1879–1903). As the university's president (1903–18), he oversaw a major expansion and developed an extension service, creating an influential model for other state universities. |
