| biography:
| Newspaper editor, born in Bath, SW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and became editor of the Manchester Guardian (known as The Guardian since 1959) at the age of 26. He raised it to a hugely respected rival of The Times by independent and often controversial editorial policies, such as opposition to the Boer War, and by his high literary standards. He was also a Liberal MP (1895–1906). He bought The Guardian in 1905, just after the death of his wife, and devoted his life to it. He retired in 1929 and left the newspaper to his younger son, who drowned four months later. |
