| Businessman and archaeologist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard and became president of Pepperell Manufacturing Co and Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Co while pursuing a career as an amateur archaeologist. After 1891 he planned and financed annual Peabody Museum expeditions to Central America, and in 1910 produced a groundbreaking study of Maya hieroglyphics. |
