| British politician, born in Inverness, Highland, N Scotland, UK. He studied at the universities of Glasgow and Indiana, USA, then worked as a journalist before being elected Social Democratic MP for Ross, Cromarty and Skye (1983– ) and becoming the youngest MP in the Commons. A supporter of merger with the Liberal Party, he was elected president of the new Liberal Democrat Party in 1990, and leader upon Paddy Ashdown's resignation in 1999. |
