| biography:
| Film pioneer, born in Paris, France. In 1896 he founded Société Pathé Frères with his brothers Emile, Théophile, and Jacques, first for cinema presentation, but expanding into manufacture. By 1912 it had become one of the largest film production organizations in the world, including a hand-coloured stencil process, Pathécolor. They introduced the newsreel in France in 1909, and shortly after in the USA and Britain, as well as the screen magazine Pathé Pictorial. Charles retired in 1929, but the company continued, and in England became Associated British Pathé Ltd (1949). |
