| Engineer and poet, born in Alford, Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland, UK. After training as a civil engineer in Aberdeen, he emigrated to South Africa (1888) and became partner in a firm of architects. He went on to hold various senior posts before becoming Secretary of Public Works in 1910. He maintained strong links with his native Alford and published poetry about farming life there, written in the local vernacular. His collections include Hamewith (1910), A Sough o' War (1917), and In the Country Places (1920). |
