| Astronomer, born in Badonviller, NE France. He had a keen interest in comets, discovering 15, and is mainly remembered for the Messier Catalog which, by 1781, contained 103 star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Objects were given alphanumeric names (M1, M2, etc) - a convention which continues to be used in astronomy. |
