| Chemist, born in Thompson, Ohio, USA. He studied at Oberlin College, OH, where in 1886 he discovered (independently of Paul Héroult) the electrolyte method of producing aluminium economically. He helped to found the Aluminum Company of America, of which he became vice-president in 1890. |
