| Scholar and mediaevalist, born in Paris, France. In 1893 he was appointed professor of mediaeval French language and literature at the Collège de France. His Roman de Tristan et Iseult in 1900 gained him a European reputation, and Les Légendes épiques (1908–13) developed his theory of the origin of the great cycles of romance. |
