| biography:
| Composer and musicologist, born in La Roche-Courbon, WC France. He studied under Franck and Marmontel. In 1897 he published Archives de la Tradition Basque then became interested in the polyphony of the Renaissance for the Semaines Saintes de St Gervais in Paris, where he was appointed in 1890. He taught Gregorian singing at the Schola Cantorum, which he opened with Guilmaut and D'Indy in 1894, followed by other schools at Avignon and Montpellier. He composed many sacred works and published anthologies of popular Basque and French music, but did not finish his opera Trois Vagues. |
