| Historian and writer, born in Burwood, Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne and Oxford universities, and in 1949 became the first professor of Australian history at the Australian National University, Canberra (emeritus in 1977). His six-volume History of Australia (1962–88), along with his Short History of Australia (1963), did much to popularize the study of Australian history in schools and colleges. |
