| Painter and designer, born in Paris, France. He studied in Rome for four years under Poussin and Vouet, and for nearly 40 years (1647–83) exercised a despotic influence over French art and artists. He is usually considered to be the founder of the French school of painting. He helped to found the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648, and was the first director of the Gobelins tapestry works in 1662. From 1668 to 1683 he was employed by Louis XIV in the decoration of Versailles. |
