| Art collector and businessman, born in Kingston, New York, USA. He worked for various railroads, then moved to Detroit in 1879, and was a founder of the American Car & Foundry Co (1899). He became a collector of oriental art, pottery, and paintings, most notably the work of James Whistler. He donated funds and his collection to the Smithsonian Institution for the construction of the Freer Gallery (1906). |
