| Physicist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He was a physicist with the US Navy (1940–5), then performed research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1945–6) and Bell Telephone Laboratories (1947–50), before becoming a professor at the University of California, Berkeley (1950–79). A leader in the application of microwave resonance methods to investigations of solid-state ferromagnetism, he was also honoured for his improvements in the college physics curriculum. |
