| biography:
| Assassin, born in Freeport, Illinois, USA. He dabbled in law, newspaper work, and preaching. He unreasonably expected to be offered a diplomatic post by the administration of President James Garfield. Failing in this, he shot the president (1881) and called out, ‘I am a Stalwart and Arthur is president now’! Despite behaving like a madman at his trial, he was found guilty, and hanged in 1882. |
