| Historian and Slavic specialist, born in Mt View, California, USA. Teaching longest at the University of Indiana, Bloomington (1962), he chaired the history department's East European Field Committee (1974–5). Working both nationally and internationally to promote Slavic studies, he served on the US Committee on International Exchange of Persons (1971–4), was on the editorial board of both the American and East European editions of Slavic Review, and wrote many books and articles on the history of the Balkan states. |
