| Yachtsman and lawyer, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was admitted to the bar in 1856, and during the Civil War he rose from Union captain to brigadier-general (1861–6). He owned and raced the legendary yachts, Mayflower, Puritan, and Volunteer in international competition, and later invested in railroad companies. |
