| King of Spain (1788–1808), born in Portici, S Italy, the son of Charles III (reigned 1759–88). His government was largely in the hands of his wife, Maria Luisa (1751–1819) and her favourite, Manuel de Godoy. Nelson destroyed his fleet at Trafalgar (1805), and in 1808 he abdicated under pressure from Napoleon. He spent the rest of his life in exile. |
