| Lawyer and art expert, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Educated privately when young, he graduated from the law school of the University of Pennsylvania (1869), and practised in Philadelphia (1869–94). After a serious accident (1894), he became an authority on historical portraits, particularly the work of Gilbert Stuart, and was known for exposing fraudulent works of art. |
