| biography:
| Poet, short-story writer, and novelist, born in Andernach, W Germany. He moved with his parents to the USA in 1922. An underground writer, his works include four novels, several collections of short stories, and many volumes of verse. A cult figure who did not achieve popular success, he had a sardonic sense of humour which is reflected in some of his titles, such as Play the Piano Drunk Like a Percussion Instrument until the Fingers Begin to Bleed a Bit (1979). Among his other works is the autobiographical Confessions of a Man Insane Enough to Live with Beasts (1965). |
