| Biblical scholar and Congregational pastor, born in Wrexham, NE Wales, UK. He lectured at Oxford, held a theological chair at Manchester, then was elected to the Norris–Hulse chair of divinity at Cambridge (1936–49) - the first Nonconformist incumbent for nearly three centuries. In 1949 he became general director for the New English Bible translation. |
