| biography:
| Baptist preacher, born in Kelvedon, Essex, SE England, UK. In 1854 he became pastor of the New Park Street Chapel, London. He drew such a large congregation with his often humorous sermons that the Metropolitan Tabernacle, seating 6000, was erected for him (1859–61). In 1887 he withdrew from the Baptist Union because of its increasingly liberal attitude. Apart from 50 popular volumes of sermons, he wrote collections of pithy sayings in John Ploughman's Talk (1869) and many other works. |
