| Astrophysicist, born in Wilton, New Hampshire, USA. As director of the Astrophysical Observatory at the Smithsonian Institution (1907–44), he carried out important research on solar radiation. He became the ‘grand old man’ of US solar physics, devising an apparatus for converting solar energy to power just before his 100th birthday. |
