| Painter, born in Chevilly, C France. He studied in Italy and moved to Paris in 1838 where he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1843 he took over the studio of Paul Delaroche and became tutor to many of the Impressionists. Although his own style was very academic, he recognized and encouraged the talents of his young pupils. His works include Lost Illusions (1843, Musée d'Orsay, Paris), but most of his work is exhibited in Lausanne, Switzerland. |
