| Corporate executive, born in Vienna, Austria. He studied in England, emigrated to the USA (1942) and started a New York import–export business (1949). In 1957 he bought the first of a number of companies that later merged into Gulf & Western Industries (1958). As chairman of the board and chief executive officer (1960–83) he forged Gulf & Western into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate through diversified acquisitions ranging from New Jersey Zinc to Paramount Pictures. |
