| Engineer and inventor, born in Euclid Township, Ohio, USA. A farmer's son, he studied mining engineering at the University of Michigan (1869) and worked as a chemist and iron merchant before leaving business to work full time on his electrical inventions. In 1879 the city of Cleveland adopted his Brush arc light, which soon went into use worldwide. The arc light made his fortune, and he devoted his later years to theoretical research and philanthropy. |
