| Diplomat and writer, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, the son of John Quincy Adams. After studying law at Harvard, he was admitted to the bar in 1828. During the Civil War he was minister to Britain (1861–8), and in 1871–2 was one of the US arbitrators on the Alabama claims. He published the life and works of his grandfather and father. |
