| biography:
| Journalist and war historian, born in Bathurst, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Oxford University, and became offical correspondent to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He landed with the AIF at Gallipoli in 1915, then accompanied the troops to France where he served until the end of the war. His major work was the 12-volume Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–18 (1921–39), writing six of the volumes himself, and editing the others. |
