| biography:
| Catholic theologian, born in Rochester, New York, USA. After being ordained and earning advanced degrees in Rome, he taught at a diocesan seminary (1962–5), counselling couples in his spare time. He then taught at Catholic University (Washington, DC), also writing on moral theology. His increasingly liberal views on sexual morality caused controversy, especially after a 1968 encyclical condemning birth control. In 1979 the Vatican began investigating him, and in 1986 he was barred from teaching at Catholic University. |
