| biography:
| Physicist, born in Fleurier, W Switzerland. He studied at Neuchâtel, and became director of the Bureau of International Weights and Measures at Sèvres. He discovered a nickel-steel alloy, ‘Invar’, which does not expand significantly and can therefore be used in precision instruments and standard measures, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1920. |
