After service in World War 2, he gained a MFA in ceramics and weaving from Cranbrook Academy (1947), and became design professor at the University of California, Berkeley (1950–79). Acclaimed as the ‘father of contemporary fibre’ he led in the development of nonfunctional textiles, the use of unusual materials, and the introduction of basketry techniques to make sculptural forms. |
