| Writer and scholar, born in France. The son of an English mother, he studied at Oxford, Berlin, and Florence, and became a literary agent. A convert to Catholicism in 1927, he founded the review Vigile in 1930 with François Mauriac, about whom he wrote a sympathetic book. His correspondence with André Gide was published as Le Dialogue avec André Gide (1929, 2nd edn 1950). |
