| biography:
| British army captain and estate manager, born in Burgh St Peter, Norfolk, E England, UK. He was the agent for Lord Erne in Co Mayo, Ireland, when bad harvests in 1879 made famine likely, and the Land League under Parnell requested lower rents to ease the tenants' burden. When Boycott ruthlessly evicted tenants in 1880, Parnell suggested they avoid any form of contact or communication with Boycott. His name thus became the source of the verb to boycott. |
