| Inventor and poet, born in Fabrezan, S France. He discovered a process for colour photography (1869) and invented a phonograph (paléophone) in 1877, the year that Thomas Edison made his first recording. His most important poetical work, Le Coffret de santal (1873), was praised by Paul Verlaine and may have influenced Arthur Rimbaud as well as 20th-c French Symbolists. |
