| Musicologist, born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, WC England, UK, the father of Fanny Burney. After composing three pieces, Alfred, Robin Hood, and Queen Mab, for Drury Lane (1745–50), he went as organist to King's Lynn, Norfolk (1751–60). He travelled in France, Italy, Germany, and Austria (1770–2) to collect material for his General History of Music (1776–89), long considered a standard work. In 1783 he became organist to Chelsea Hospital. |
