| Sportsman, born in Croydon, S Greater London, UK. An outstanding all-rounder, he gained his Blue at Oxford for athletics, cricket, and soccer, and later represented his country in all three. Best remembered as a cricketer, he played 26 Tests for England. With Don Bradman he holds the record of six consecutive centuries in first-class cricket. He acted as India's delegate to the League of Nations, after World War 1, and was at one point offered the throne of Albania, but declined. |
