| biography:
| Composer, born in Bordeaux, SW France. He was an organist in Bordeaux at the age of 11, and gained first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris with ‘Widor’ in 1919. He became organist at Sainte-Clotilde (1898–1939) after Pierné. A strong Catholic, he composed the 255 pieces of ‘L'Orgue Mystique’, a cycle which he envisaged as surpassing the work of the protestant Bach. Other works include dramas such as ‘La Légende de Tristan’, eight symphonies, pieces of chamber music, melodies, and choral works. He was also a remarkable improviser. |
