| Classicist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He was admitted to the bar (1919), became professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia University the next year, and was the first American to prepare critical editions of classical writers (Horatii Poemata, 1830). He produced the first American edition of Lemprierè's Classical Dictionary which he virtually rewrote, and his contribution was recognized when the third edition (1833) was called Anthon's Classical Dictionary. His nephew Charles Edward Anthon (1823–83) was the numismatist and president of the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society of New York (1869–83). |
