| biography:
| Painter, born in Nice, SE France, the son of the painter Jean-Baptiste van Loo. He studied in Paris and Rome, and worked in Turin for two years. In 1735 he became a member of the Academy and was its director in 1763. He was principal painter to the king (1762) and painted portraits of many of his notable contemporaries in a grand and colourful style which gave rise to a new French verb, vanlooter. His works include ‘Louis XV, roi de France et de Navarre’ (1774, Versailles). |
