| Manufacturer, born in Somerset Co, Maine, USA. A shoe manufacturer in Lynn, MA, he helped form the Lynn Syndicate (1883) to purchase the American Electric Co in Connecticut, which was relocated to Lynn as the Thomas-Houston Company. In 1892 it merged with the Edison Electric Co (NY) and he was elected president of the new firm, named General Electric Co (1892–1913). Under his leadership as chairman of the board (1913–22), the company grew to a multi-million dollar business. During World War 1 he created the War Relief Clearing House, later consolidated with the Red Cross. The Charles A Coffin Foundation awards research fellowships to college graduates. |
