| Composer, born in Liège, E Belgium. He studied at the Liège Conservatoire and at Paris, where he acquired French nationality, and settled as a teacher and organist, composing in his leisure hours. His reputation rests on a few masterpieces all written after the age of 50, the best known being a violin sonata, a string quartet, a symphony, and the Variations symphoniques (1885) for piano and orchestra. |
