| Composer, born in Vilnius, E Lithuania. An expert on fortification, he became lieutenant-general of engineers. Practically a self-taught musician, he composed William Ratcliff (1861) and other operas, as well as songs and piano music. He was associated with Borodin and others as one of ‘The Five’ in Russian music. |
