| biography:
| Pope (1294–1303), born in Anagni, C Italy. He was made cardinal priest in 1291. As pope he tried to reassert papal superiority over temporal powers, particularly Edward I of England and Philip IV of France. In 1303 he was briefly kidnapped by the French at Anagni, and died in Rome shortly after being released. His brief captivity led to the papacy taking up residence at Avignon. |
