| Poet, born in Dordrecht, W Netherlands. He studied English language and literature, made his debut with Het geïrriteerde lied (1941, The Irritated Song), and became well known through his nonsensical collection of poems Gorgelrijmen (1944, Gargle Rhymes). In 1954 he was one of the first to acknowledge the importance of the Movement of Fifty in an essay. In addition, he also contributed to Barbarber. His witty style of writing poetry and his unique way of reading them aloud made him into one of the most popular ‘performing poets’. He also wrote a novel, De avonturen van Bazip Zeehok (1969, The Adventures of Bazip Zeehok), and compiled the reference book Lexicon der poëzie (1968, Poetry Lexicon). |
