| Writer, born in Cairo, Egypt. Chiefly a novelist, he also wrote biographical and travel books. He is known especially for his creation of Horatio Hornblower. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Literature in 1938 with Ship of the Line, and several of his works have been filmed, notably The African Queen (1935). |
